10日間に及ぶ中国ツア～も今日で最終日。中国から日本に帰国します。

Today is the last day of our China tour. We are going back to Japan. I miss China so much.

北京の空港に向かう車を待つ間にも、寺田さんは絵を描いています。

While waiting for our car to the airport, Terada-san is drawing again.

寺田さんがいつも首から下げているソニーのデジカメの話になりました。画角は狭いけれど焦点距離が長い、近くのものに焦点を合わせると遠くのものがボケやすいレンズが好みとのこと。

The topic inside the car was about the digital camera which Terada-san was always wearing around his neck. The angle of view is bit narrow but the focal length is quite long. He likes the lens which blurs the far when focusing on the near.

車の中で、寺田さんがヒマラヤで撮影した写真を見せてくれました。

風景や人物など、寺田さんがカメラを通して見ているもの。いい写真だなあ。寺田さんが夢枕獏さんや林家彦いちさん達と旅したお話しを伺い、ずっと笑い転げていました。これらの写真で2時間トークができるとか。

The landscapes and the people. This is what he is seeing through his camera. Such a nice photo. I was laughing the whole time to the stories Terada-san told about travelling with Yumemakura Baku-san and Hikoichi Hayashiya-san. It’s just amazing that Terada-san can entertain us for couple of hours with just few photos.

北京の空港に到着。まるでスタジアムのように巨大な建築です。中国各地を共に旅してきたライブ・ドローイング作品も一緒です。

We arrivied at the airport in Beijing which architecture reminds me of a huge stadium. We will be travelling together with the artworks Terada-san drew at the event in Guangzhou.

空港内に唯一の、いわゆるお土産やさん。PIEスタッフはすでに北京市街で社内向けのお土産を購入していましたが、寺田さんは中国にいる間、観光らしい観光はせず、イベントと食事以外ではずっとお仕事をされていました。「でもオレ、会社に行くわけじゃないから、友達に会うまでに自分で食べちゃうんだよな」と笑っていました。

Terada-san was shopping at the only souvenir shop in the airport. PIE staff bought their souvenirs at shops in Beijing but Terada-san didn’t have any time for sightseeing or anything. Other than attending the event and eating, he was working the whole time. “At the end I think I’m going to eat this myself before I see my friends because I’m not going back to the office or anything.”

その後、飛行機はほぼ定刻通り、羽田空港まで私達を運んでくれました。約3時間の旅。たったの3時間で、また北京に行けるんだなあ。

Our plane departed on time and safely brought us back to the Haneda airport in Tokyo. Only three hour flight. You can actually go to Beijing in three hours, I felt keenly.

「お疲れ様でした！」無事に帰国し、寺田さん、PIEスタッフともに帰宅の途につきました。

“Thank you all!”

Terada-san and PIE staff left the airport.

振り返ってみると、大変だったこともあるけれど、中国のファンとの交流がとても楽しくうれしく、PIEスタッフはなんだかさびしい気持ちになりました。当初、PIEスタッフはセンドポインツさんや書店さんの熱い声を聞いて中国ツア～を決めたものの、実際のファンには会ったことがなかったため、何の先入観も持っていませんでした。

そしてそこで出会った寺田さんのファンは、温かく、礼儀正しく、熱い気持ちで寺田さんを待ってくれていました。それは日本や欧米のファンと同じ姿。寺田さんを歓迎し、真剣に見て、聞いてくれる姿がうれしかった。言葉や場所や文化が違っても、同じものが好きな人たちは世界共通であることを知りました。

Looking back, it sure was a tough tour but I really enjoyed interacting with the fans in China and now we all truly miss them. We decided to do this tour encouraged by the passion from SendPoints and bookstores. We didn’t have any clue what the fans in China would be like because we have never met them before. But the fans welcomed Terada-san warmly, politely and with passion. It was no different from the fans in Japan, US and Europe. I was so happy to see that the fans welcomed Terada-san and listened to what he had to say, stared at what he was drawing in a serious manner. I realized that all the fans who love Terada-san are the same regardless of their nationality, language and culture.

ツア～の結果、各書店に納品した本は全て売り切れ。完売です。さらにSNSを通じてイベントの様子が拡散され、そのほかの書店からも注文が殺到。販売会社であるセンドポインツに納品してあった在庫も、全て出荷先が確定しているとか。センドポインツさん、書店のみなさん、増刷も検討しますので、追加発注お願いします！まだまだこれからですよ！

As a result, all the books were sold out. It literally sold out. The event was live-streamed which was spread by SNS and because of this we received many orders from other bookstores.

寺田さんファンのみなさん、よろこんでくれる顔に出会えてうれしかったです。お越しいただきありがとうございました。またお会いしましょう。

関係者のみなさんにも感謝を伝えたいです。

誰もがなしえない独創性と粘り強さで美しいブックデザインをした上、寺田さんに中国行きを奨め、お忙しいなか北京で明るくイベントを盛り上げてくれた祖父江さん。さすがの司会進行でイベントを盛り上げ、拡散してくれた『知日』編集長の蘇静さん。上海ではファンを代表して質問をしてくれたアーティストの小龙花さん。

To all the Katsuya Terada fans, it was a pleasure meeting you all and seeing your happy faces. Thank you for coming to the event. See you again.

イベントを引き受け、地元のファンを呼び寄せて、臨機応変に対応して頂いた広州・方所書店、上海・光的空間、北京・言几又のみなさん。通訳だけでなく食事やガイドなど生活を支えてくれた三田さん、チーさん、斉藤さん。

優秀な二人を10日間も同行させてくれたセンドポインツの林社長と、営業や流通スタッフのみなさん。特に、昼間は書店との連絡やプロモーション、夜中はこの連載を中国語にし、次はもっと頑張るからまた来年も来てください！と2度も寺田さんに言ってくれたAstridさんと、「寺田さんは中国でとても人気です！」と言って私たちに中国ツア～を決断させ、事前準備、通訳やプロモーション、明るさで私達を支えてくれたMIKIさん。君たち二人はプロフェッショナルです。林社長、二人は本当に頑張ったのでボ～ナス弾んであげてください。

そして日本からこのツア～や連載を支えてくれたPIEスタッフたち。ツア～に10日間同行し、イベントの下準備や通訳などを一手に引き受けた国際部部長と、『寺田克也原寸』を編み上げ、あらゆるバランスに前向きに配慮し続けた編集長。

みなさん、一緒にこのツア～を作り上げていただきありがとうございました。

Thank you so much for coming with us to China and passing your wisdom and skill as a professional illustrator, while carrying so many works with a tight schedule on your hand. Being with you for the last 10 days, we have learnt important things as a person and what it takes to be professional.

最後に、寺田さんから今回の中国ツア～についてコメントをいただきましたので紹介いたします。

Finally, I would like to share Terada-san’s comment about this China tour below.

「シルクロード遊山の旅はした事がありましたが、今回は書店巡りで広州、上海、北京にお邪魔してきた。つまりは仕事の旅です。旅の目的と様子は三芳社長の熱い熱い日記で読んでもらうとして、ここではオレの感動した事について書いてみたい。それはなんと言ってもメシのウマさです！毎日おいしかった！

そしてごはんがおいしい土地に住む人は全員いい人！間違いない。

で、その中でもオレの絵を知っていてくれた人たち。これはもう無条件にうれしい。

うまいメシと熱いファン。それ以上にうれしい事はありませんよ？

真面目な話、近くて遠い国が中国だ。主義や社会の成り立ちや歴史やらハッキリ言ってかなり複雑な関係です。でもそれは国と国の話だ。オレの経験上、そこに行ってそこに住む人と交流すると、自分の狭い先入観は大体塗り替えを余儀なくされます。今回の旅もそう。大勢のファンが詰めかけてくれた。そしてどこの国のファンも同じハートをぶつけてきてくれる。オレの仕事はエンターテインメントに属してます。一種のサービス業でもある。絵やマンガやキャラクターを観てくれて浮世の事を一瞬でも忘れてたのしんでもらうだけでオッケー。アメリカやヨーロッパでもたくさんのそういう人達に会えた。それがこんな近くの国にもいるなんてな！！さらにオレの身の程を越えた言葉をたくさんくれました。こっちはただただ、好きだから描いてきた、他に取り柄もない男なのに。なので最大限のありがとうを中国に向けて送ると共に、もっと精進してたのしんでもらえるモノを作って行く事を約束したい。呼んでくれてありがとう。謝謝！そして再見。」

I have travelled the mountains of Silk Road but this time it was a bookstore tour. So it was a work but I travelled from Guangzhou, Shanghai and to Beijing. You can read Mr. Miyoshi’s passionate diary to know the purpose of this tour and what happened in this tour. Here, I would like to write about what got me excited the most during this tour. That was definitely the food! There was not a day that I wasn’t satisfied. And where the food is nice, the people are nice as well. This can’t go wrong. And on top of that I’m absolutely flattered to know that many people knew about me and loved my work.

An excellent food and passionate fans, you need nothing more. To be honest with you, to us China is our neighbor but emotionally there is a distance. The relationship between Japan and China is complex if you take a look at their ideology, formation of its social structure and the history. But that is just a political issue. From my experience, if you actually visit the country and interact with the people there, your preconception will be forced to be overwritten in a positive way no matter what. That’s what happened to me in this tour. Many fans rushed to the event. And they all had a good heart same like the fans in the other countries. I think what I do is categorized as “Entertainment”. I guess it’s something like a customer service. I would be more than happy if just for a moment, by looking at my illustrations, manga and the characters I designed, people can forget about the tough things in their lives. I met many fans in the US and Europe who appreciates my works like that and I was surprise to see it was the same in China. My fans existed in a country so closed from us and I was lucky that I met them. You have given me so many nice words that I don’t deserve. I just kept drawing only because I like drawing. Really, I don’t have anything else I can be proud of. That is why I would like to send you my biggest appreciations and I would like to promise that I will keep myself devoted into drawing and keep creating something entertaining. Thank you for having me. Xiexie! (Thank you) And Zaijian! (See you again)
