今日はいよいよ今回の中国ツア～で最後のイベント、北京・王府井にある書店、言几又でのトークイベントの日です。寺田さんと、『寺田克也原寸』のブックデザインをされた祖父江慎さん、日本文化を紹介する月刊誌『知日』の編集長・蘇静さんの3人でトークします。トークが中心の記事のため、いままでで一番、長文になります。

We have finally come to the last stop of our long China tour. Terada-san is going to have a talk event with Mr. Shin Sobue, the designer of “KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE”, and Mr. Johnny Su, the founder and the editor in chief of the Zhi Japan magazine specializing in Japanese culture, at Yan Ji You bookstore in WF Central, Beijing. Please bear with me as it is going to the longest diary in the series.

こちらが北京の繁華街、王府井（ワン・フー・チン）。中央に巨大なショッピングモール、「王府中環」があります。

This is Wangfujing, down town area in Beijing. At the center you can see the biggest shopping mall called “WF Central”.

この施設の一角に、言几又（イェン・ジー・ヨー）があります。まずは広州・方所書店で描き上げた絵を設置しにきました。

Yan Ji You bookstore is located in this shopping mall. First we came here to display Terada-san’s artwork which he produced at Fangsuo bookstore in Guangzhou.

書店員さんやセンドポインツさんと一緒に、絵を設置中。

Yan Ji You bookstore staff, SendPoints and us, together we displayed the artworks.

設置を完了するとすぐに、お客さんが撮影を始めました。

As soon as we finished displaying, the customers started taking pictures.

近づいて撮影すると、寺田さんの筆致がこんなによく見えます。肉眼で見ると、大きな作品の全体を詳細に見ることができるので、ぜひとも北京のファンにも見てほしかったのです。

If you take a closer look, you can see the whole illustration in detail. You will be amazed to see Terada-san’s various lines, bold but sensitive, which he creates with just one black marker. Because you can only see this with your own eyes, I wanted to bring this to Beijing to let the people in Beijing experience this.

Today’s event is being advertised on the digital signage.

イベント会場入り口では、『寺田克也原寸』と共に、『祖父江慎＋コズフィッシュ』も積まれていました。

At the entrance area, together with “KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE”, “Sobue Shin + Cozfish” was stacked up.

こちらは会場。

Here we are. This is today’s venue.

今日のイベントも、ライブ・ストリーミングで配信されます。

Same with the other events, today’s event will be live-streamed.

事前にイベント参加を予約していた大勢のファンのみなさんが、本を買うのに並ぶ様子。広州、上海を経験してきて予想はしていましたが、やはり北京でも寺田さんは人気です。

People who have made pre-orders lining up to buy the book before the event. I have already experienced how popular Terada-san is in Guangzhou and Shanghai but there was no difference in Beijing.

書店に併設のカフェで、少年たちが何か描いているようなので見せてもらいました。『寺田克也原寸』を開き、模写をしておりました。期待が高まっているようです。

Some kids were drawing something at the adjoining café. I asked them what they were drawing. They were copying illustrations from the book “KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE”. I can feel their excitement already.

イベント開演までの時間、別のカフェでは通訳の方々による固有名詞の確認をしていました。寺田さんの描いてきたマーベルの「アイアンマン」や「ウルヴァリン」など、中国ではどのように発音するのか。通訳ならではの下準備ですね。

Translators preparing for the event at a different cafe. They were checking some proper nouns such as “Ironman” and “Wolverine”. I wonder how they would pronounce these in Chinese. I assume this kind of preparation must be unique to the translators.

寺田さん、祖父江さん、蘇静さんも到着。トーク前の打ち合わせです。

Terada-san, Sobue-san and Su-san arrives and joins the meeting.

蘇静さんが絵を描くことや使用するツールについて質問します。寺田さん、早速描きはじめました。

Su-san questions Terada-san about illustrating and the tools he uses. Again Terada-san starts to draw.

祖父江さんも横で見ながら、「描くの早いね～」と言っています。

Sobue-san sitting next to Terada-san says “Wow, you draw so fast”.

蘇静さんは『寺田克也原寸』の「あとがき」も確認していました。隣にいる日中通訳の斉藤さんが丁寧に説明しています。そう、ここには寺田さんの絵を描くことへの姿勢を垣間見ることができる、大切なことが書かれています。みなさんもぜひ読んでみてください。

Su-san was reading the afterword of “KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE” carefully. Saito-san the translator was explaining it in detail. The afterword has many valuable things mentioned where you can catch a glimpse of Terada-san’s attitude towards drawing. I recommend everyone to read it.

一方、祖父江さんやPIEチームは知日さんの出版物の紙に驚いてました。こんな紙、日本に無いよね、どこで作ってるんですか…なんて。

On the other hand, Sobue-san and PIE team was surprised by Zhi Japan’s publications and saying something like “we don’t have this kind of paper in Japan”, “where do you make these?”… and so on.

さて会場に戻ると、満員でした。

When we went back to the venue it was already full of people.

寺田さん、祖父江さんも会場入り。

Terada-san and Sobue-san appears on stage.

立ち見が出るほどの、超・満員。蘇静さんから寺田さんに質問が始まりました。中国の印象や、大猿王のこと、特撮映画のこと。

All the seats were full and there were many people standing to see the event. Su-san starts by asking Terada-san some questions about his impression on China, about “Dragon Girl and Monkey King” and about Tokusatsu (Japanese special effects movies).

メビウスさんについて。「15歳のとき、世界を描くための線がここにあると気づいた」

「今はメビウスからもらったものを、次へと渡していくところに移っていると思う」

メビウスさんへの追悼のイラストがプロジェクターに映し出されていました。

About Moebius, Terada-san narrates while his illustration dedicated to Moebius was projected onto the screen, “It was when I was 15 years old that I realized that this is what I need to visualize the world”.

“Now, I have moved on to the stage where I’m passing on what I have given from Moebius to the next generation”.

創作業界へ入る人、これから入る人へのアドバイスを。「あつかましいようだけど、35年仕事をしていても、自分は新人だと思っている。満足していない。一個一個、手を抜かないこと、が最大のアドバイス。あとは怠惰との闘い」

今後の計画は？「無いです。あえて言えば、死ぬまで続けていくことです」

観客との距離も近く、みなさん真剣に聞き入っています。すごい熱気です。

“Do you have an advice to the young generations who seeks to enter the creative industry?”

“After 35 years in my career I still think myself as a newcomer. I was never satisfied by myself. And this is the most important thing. Never cut corners. And overcome your laziness”.

“What is your future plan?”

“I don’t have any. But one thing I can say is that I just keep on doing this till the day I die.”

The distance between the audience and the guests are very close, everyone is listening attentively. The venue is filled with excitement.

次に、蘇静さんからの質問は、祖父江さんへと向けられました。祖父江さんが中国語であいさつをするので、笑いが起こります。

祖父江先生、北京はお好きですか？「大好きです！中国が好きなのは、文字（漢字）が生まれた国だから」

Next, Su-san questions Sobue-san. But first Sobue-san greets the audience in Chinese which breaks the ice and made everyone laugh.

“Sobue-san, do you like Beijing?”

“I like China very much! Because it’s the origin of Kanji”

中国語と日本語のグラフィックデザインの違いは何があるでしょう？「中国はあるとき、一瞬にしてすべてが縦書きから横書きに変わった。日本では文学は縦書き、情報は横書きが多い。どちらも面白く、いいところがある。多分、縦書きは呼吸が合うんだと思う。横は呼吸と関係ないので、検索しやすい。でも、変わっていくかもしれない。吉本ばななさんと仕事をしたとき、『小説なのに横書きはおかしい』と言ったら、『でも私、横に書いてるのでおかしいと感じない』という会話をした」

中国簡体字のデザインを依頼したら引き受けてくれますか？「カモ～ン！」

“What is the difference between graphic design in China and Japan?”

“In China, at some point all at once everything changed from vertical writing to horizontal writing. In Japan, most of the times novels are written vertically and information is written horizontally. They are both interesting and have their own advantages. I personally think that vertical writing has a rhythm. Horizontal writing doesn’t so it’s more suitable for searching. But things might change. I have once had a conversation with Banana Yoshimoto when we worked together. I said “This is a novel, it shouldn’t be horizontal writing.” But she said “I don’t think it’s weird at all as I always write my novel horizontally”.

“Will you accept our offer doing a simplified Chinese font design?”

“Anytime boss!”

話題は『寺田克也原寸』へと移ります。

「最初は大きいサイズ、新聞と同じくらいで考えていたのだけど、出版社（PIE）からそれでは書店から返品されるからダメと言われちゃった。それで16%に縮小しようとしたけど、元が大きいからデリケートな絵に見えちゃう。それで原寸ページと16%のページで構成することになった」

The topic moves to “KATSUYA TEARDA REAL SIZE”.

Sobue-san, the designer of the book narrates “At first, I wanted the book to be as large as a newspaper but PIE declined my idea because no bookstore will stock that kind of book and they will return it. So I decided to shrink the illustrations by 16% but because the original artworks are huge, when you shrink it, each becomes a very delicate piece. At the end I design the book showing both the real size and the 16% size.

みんな笑っています。祖父江さんのキャラクターは、中国の方にも愛されていて、Weibo上でも中国語で「カワイイ！」というコメントがありました。

Everyone was laughing. Sobue-san has such a lovely personality and people in China loves his so much that there were many people commenting on Weibo “He is so Cute! (Kawaii!)” (Chinese version of Facebook).

話題は『祖父江慎＋コズフィッシュ』にも及びます。蘇静さんもこの本をお持ちのようです。

寺田さん「ああ、この本は素晴らしい本です」

祖父江さん「僕の展覧会のタイミングで出版するはずだったのが出せなくって、結局その次の展覧会で出すことに。10年かかっちゃった…」

蘇静さん「祖父江さんは楽しい方ですが、どんなことが悩みですか？」

祖父江さん「悩みの無いことが悩み…うまくいかないとうれしくなっちゃう。企画を出版社に出しても出しても通らないと、うれしくなっちゃう」

祖父江さんは実際に逆境を楽しむ方です。この『祖父江慎＋コズフィッシュ』を出版する際、筆者は実際に目の当たりにしました。発売の直前に、本の奥付にある発行日表記が間違っており、シールで貼る修正をしなければならなくなったのですが、普通は目立たないようにするところを、やったー！とばかりに蛍光ピンクの楽しい修正シールを作ってしまいました。逆境を楽しむことでこの版はかえって希少価値を持つことになったのです。

They talked about “Sobue Shin + Cozfish” as well. It seems like Su-san has this book too.

Terada-san: “Ahh, this is such a beautiful book”.

Sobue-san: “It was supposed to be published for my exhibition, but couldn’t and at the end it took 10 years to finish this book. It was in time for my next exhibition.”

Su-san: “Sobue-san, you are such an entertaining person. What do you worry about?”

Sobue-san: “I worry about I don’t worry about anything. It’s so fun when something goes wrong. I get excited when I keep presenting my plan to the publishers but they keep declining my proposal.”

Sobue-san is a type of person who enjoys adversity. I actually experienced this myself when making this book “Sobue Shin + Cozfish”. Just before the publication date, a pub date mistake was found at the colophon and we had to put a correction sticker over it. Usually we take extreme care to make it as discreet as possible but Sobue-san had produced a bright pink correction sticker as if he was happy finding the mistake.

At the end this edition has become a rare collectible item.

次に、会場からの声を聞く時間になりました。「絵を描き続けることは大変なことだったけど、寺田さんに勇気をもらって続けることができ、プロとして仕事を続けています」と男性からの言葉に拍手が。寺田さんからは「僕も大きいことも小さいことも、苦しいこともあったけれど、祖父江さんからもあったように、トラブルがあっても笑顔で向かえることが強みです」と返し、こちらも大きな拍手が起きました。

Next, it’s time for a Q&A session with the audience.

“It was tough for me to keep on drawing but because of you Terada-san, I was able to carry on and now I have become a professional illustrator”. A man thanks Terada-san and Terada-san replies “I have encountered big problems, small problems, experienced tough times but same with Sobue-san, it’s my strength to overcome any trouble with a smile”. Everyone gives him a round of applause to both.

子供からも質問が。絵の初心者に向けて、アドバイスをください！「ひたすら描くこと。また、絵を描くというのは、ものを見ること。君がこれから出会うものをよく見て、それから描くといいよ」。かわいらしい質問に、厳しい顔をしていた会場の警備の方まで微笑んでいます。

A question from a child. “Do you have an advice for a beginner?”

“Just keep on drawing. And to draw is to see. Observe what you are going to witness and then you should try to draw. Even a guard at the venue with a grim face smiles to a cute question.

さらに、学生時代の思い出を聞かれた寺田さん。「学校ではあまりまじめではなく、『石をモチーフに描く』課題なんて面倒なので、一時間くらいでちゃちゃっとやってしまおうと考えていたが、やりはじめて気づいたら夕方になっていた。翌日も描き続けて、やがて描き切ったときの自分の感情に驚いた。その記憶はたびたびよみがえる。仕事でうまくいかないときにもそのときの感情を思い出すと、がんばれる」

Terada-san was asked about his school days. “I was not a roll model type. When I was given a task to [draw a motif on a rock], I thought I’d finish this kind of cumbersome task in an hour or so but when I knew it, half a day have past. The next day I kept on doing drawing and when I finally finished I was astonished by my passion. This feeling still comes back to my mind. Whenever I’m not doing well at work I recall this feeling to keep myself going.

祖父江さんへも質問が。いつもアイデアにあふれる仕事をされていますが、クリエイティブであり続けるための秘訣は？

A question to Sobue-san.

“You have always done so many works full of amazing ideas what keeps you so creative?”

「寺田さんと同じように、ものをよく見ること。自分のやる仕事に対して、このやろう、と勝ちにいくこと。仕事がよくない方向に行きそうなときは、よくないものをみんなで楽しむこと。最終的には自分とのたたかいだね。よくない状況は、一回受け取ってから、おもしろく返したい」と祖父江さん。

“Same with what Terada-san said. Observe things carefully. Whenever things start to go in a wrong direction, enjoy that. At the end it’s a battle between you and yourself. I always like to accept bad situation and turn it into something fun.

質問は止まらず、終了時間に差し掛かったとき、ずっと手をあげていた男性が「おーい！質問でーす！」と声を上げました。

僕も寺田さんと同じ仕事をしています。年をとっても続ける秘訣は？

「すごく最終的には、健康。心と体、両方。心で言うと、ネットで悪口を言わない、とか。自分が面白がることを探し、周りを面白がらせること、それを創作する力にしています。悪口なんて言っても仕方がない。体で言うと、よく食べて、よく寝ること」

The audience never stopped raising their hand but a show must come to an end. As we were about to end the event a man who has been raising his hand for a long time shouted “Hey! I want to ask a question!”

“I’m an illustrator like you Terada-san. What is the secret to continuing this job when you are aging?”

“In the end it’s all about keeping yourself healthy, both body and mind. In terms of mind, don’t say bad things on the internet. Find something which entertains you. Entertain someone around you. That keeps me motivated. You can get nothing out of saying bad things about someone. In terms of body, eat well and sleep well.”

お二人の、まっすぐで誠実なご回答に、北京のみなさんは真剣に聞き入っていました。北京のみなさんの真剣さが伝わったからこそ、このような貴重なお話をしていただけたのだと思います。

People on Beijing were all ears to their honest and straight forward answers. I think it was because both Terada-san and Sobue-san sensed the seriousness of the people in Beijing that they told many precious stories.

蘇静さんの手慣れた完璧な司会進行で、時間通りトークイベントは終了。集合写真のあと、サイン会に移ります。

The talk event has come to an end as scheduled lead perfectly by Su-san. After the photo time we moved on to a signing session.

サイン会では寺田さんがサインしたあと、「ソ～ビ～」と言って祖父江さんに渡し、

During the signing session, after signing Terada-san passes the book to Sobue-san saying “Sooooo beeeeeee”

「OK！カモ～ン！カッツィ～！」と祖父江さんもサインする、という贅沢なサイン会。

And Sobue-san receives the book saying “OK! Come on! KATSUUUUUUUUU!” and signs it.

I’m sure no one has witnessed such a moment before.

How luck people in Beijing are!

サイン会に並んでいたの最後の一人が、著名なアーティストの刘冬子（リウ・ドン・ツー）さんでした！

結局、言几又に納品した本は『寺田克也原寸』も『祖父江慎＋コズフィッシュ』も全て売り切れとなりました。北京のファンみなさん、ありがとうございました。

To our surprise, the last person who was in the queue was Liu Dongzi (a famous artist in China).

At the end, both “KATSUYA TERADA REAL SIZE” and “Sobue Shin + Cozfish” were sold out.

祖父江さんとはここでお別れ。祖父江さんは翌日も北京で用事があるのです。

We part with Sobue-san. He has a different appointment in Beijing tomorrow.

また東京で会いましょう！祖父江さん、ありがとうございました！さて、長いようで短かった中国ツア～のイベントはこれですべて無事に終了。翌日は帰国するのみです。次回は連載最終回、寺田さんから、今回のツア～についてのコメントも掲載予定です。
